In a world consumed by shadows and despair, two young women stand together, hearts filled with fear. Bound by love and hope, they hold their ground waiting for menfolk who have gone to do their duty on the battlefield. This is a tale of longing, devotion and the terrible anticipation of inevitable destruction. Based on a poem by the renowned Dutch writer Marco Kunst, this song tells the dramatic story of those left behind when a country goes to war.
lyrics
We meet halfway the old stone bridge,
Best place there is to meet.
‘Cause you live on the other side.
And I live ‘round the corner.
We laugh and talk as always,
Like we used to do before
Today seems just another sunny day.
We smoke and drink our beers and cokes,
And crack the same old silly jokes
And laugh… and laugh…
And laugh… and laugh…
And laugh………….
Dark lights, flash on the horizon
Faint sound of thunder in the air.
We wonder if they’re getting closer
But act as if we just don’t care
We talk about stupid boys and same old songs
And movies we have never seen
We dream about a life
We cannot know
And long for places we have never been.
We keep on smiling although your man
and my father they are gone
We don’t know where they’ve gone
or if they will be back
And still, we laugh, we act
We laugh, we laugh
We laugh,
And still, we laugh
We act, we laugh
We laugh
Dark lights, flash on the horizon
Faint sound of thunder in the air
We wonder if they’re getting closer
But act as if we just don’t care
Dark lights on the horizon
Smell of thunder in the air
We know the war is drawing closer
Still try to act like we don’t care
Still try to act like we don’t care
Still try to act like we don’t care
